Welcome to the
Whitsundays
Motosport Club !
A bit of history :
A public meeting
Initiated by a
small group of
motorsport
enthusiasts
from the
Whitsundays region
was called in
November 2005 to
gauge local
support for
the establishment
of the Whitsundays
Motor Sport and
Driver Training
Facility ,
and was attended
by some 40
interested
parties. It
became clear that
there was great
community support
and need for such
a facility. An
Asphalt track and
a skid pan were
seen as essential
elements.
To facilitate the
project,
Whitsunday Moto
Sports Club
Incorporated in
mid 2006
and formed a
Steering
Committee. The
Steering Committee
began discussions
with the
Whitsunday Shire
Council with a
view to finding a
suitable location
for the proposed
facility close to
the towns of
Airlie Beach,
Proserpine, Bowen
and Collinsville
and central to the
mining precincts
of the Bowen
basin.
Whitsunday Moto
Sports Club Inc.
continues to grow
and now has over
60 members and is
affiliated with
Motorcycling
Australia (QLD)
and the
Australian
Karting
Association.
The proposed
facility will
comprise an
Asphalt track 8
metres wide and
approximately
1.1km long in a
park like
setting. There
will be a ‘skid
pan’ to compliment
the driver
training facility.
In addition a
‘Tiny Tots’
traffic awareness
miniaturised
intersection with
traffic lights and
signs etc will be
provided.
Buildings will
comprise an
amenities block,
canteen, small
classroom and
storage areas.
Meetings with road
safety experts
have confirmed the
Committee’s view
that the venue
would provide a
first class Driver
Training facility.
There is no
similar facility
in Queensland
outside Brisbane.
In sporting terms
the facility will
be used initially
for Go Karting and
Motorcycling
events. Sprint
Cars and vintage
cars
will
also utilize the
track and help
ensure longer term
sustainability of
the venue.
